EPW - Charles Frodsham, London, 48mm, heavy 18K gold original HC bearing London hallmarks for 1866, "A S" marking in oval cameo for casemaker Alfred Stram, gold cuvette with presentation "Greely S. Curtis, Boston, U.S., 1867," white enamel SS dial, SW-button-set, fully capped lever escapement with tail of lever banking on a single upright pin, 20J, diamond endstone, gilt mvt, s#03480 with matching serial number within case and on dial. Gross weight of assembled watch 78.3 dwt (121.8 g). Greely Stevenson Curtis (b. November 21, 1830, d. February 12, 1897) was a captain in the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. Later in the war he became a Lieutenant Colonel and Commander of the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. Following the war, President Andrew Johnson nominated Curtis for the award of the honorary grade of Brevet Brigadier General for gallant and meritorious services during the war and this honor was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 30th, 1867. Mvt: GRO, near mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone, few mild micro-fine scratches, some light ultra-fine scratch striations from slight wiping; dial with hl from 12 to center, hl above seconds-register; near mint hands; case shows ample wear to front and rear as engine turning detail has been polished off, band shows very light wear, no dents, few small ripples from very slight lid dings, engine turning detail is fully lost; tight gold-filled replacement bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.
